After a successful inaugural Honolulu Family Festival in
2006, Mayor Mufi Hannemann and the non-profit group
Honolulu 100 have decided to continue with a festival this
year. The 2007 Honolulu Family Festival, which was held at
Magic Island from Thursday, March 29 to Sunday, April 1,
2007 was a four-day festival, free and open to the public.
Money raised went toward the refurbishment of Ala Moana
Park.
“One of the reasons why I’m very happy about this festival
is they’re going to donate proceeds from the festival to
help the city maintain Ala Moana Park,” said Mayor
Hannemann. “I have very fond memories from my
hanabata days, when this
place used to be the site of our best and greatest
carnivals,” he added.
“Last year’s festival attracted more than 60,000 residents
and visitors,” said Linda Wong, chair of Honolulu 100.
“This year, when the Mayor asked us to get involved and
take the responsibility to run another festival, we
agreed,” she added.
“The response was so great from last year’s festival that
we decided to
Hana
Hou and do it again,” said Mayor Hannemann.
Linda Wong serves as Honolulu 100 chair, Stanford Yuen as
vice-chair, Fran Kirk as treasurer, and Charlian Wright as
secretary. Fran Kirk is serving as chairperson of Family
Festival 2008.
